What Does the Cornea Do and Why Does It Matter So Much?
Most people don’t really think about the cornea until something goes wrong. But it does a lot more than you’d expect.
It’s the clear outer layer at the front of your eye. It helps focus light-actually, a big part of your eye’s focusing happens here before the lens even gets involved. At the same time, it acts like a shield, protecting your eye from dust, germs, and daily exposure.
The cornea is made up of multiple layers. If even one of these layers gets affected-because of an infection, injury, or a condition-it can start affecting how clearly you see.
Another thing: the cornea doesn’t have blood vessels. That’s why sometimes healing takes time, and why certain corneal conditions need proper follow-up instead of just quick treatment.
